RESEARCH PEARL: Biomarker for DDD

05/05/2020

RNAs have been in the news lately, so this study takes a little twist on the role of RNA in spine disease. Circulating microRNAs can give a glimpse of current disease states. In healthy versus disc disease patients, those with disc disease were found to have significantly downregulated levels of miR-155-5p. It's an accurate diagnostic predictor for the presence of degeneration. Bottomline: Degenerative disc disease patients may have a special biomarker indicating that they have degenerative disc disease:  SERUM MIR-155-5P. The blood tells much..and may be an early indicator of disc disease! Read more about this finding.
